Damp in the garage: protect what you store

Look for the source of moisture and leave stored belongings accessible for inspection.

Do not buy more enclosed storage to hide damp belongings. First work out whether water is coming through the building, being brought in on equipment, or appearing as condensation. Several causes can exist together, and a storage layout cannot repair them.

What you notice Useful next check
Wet area after rain Look for the water route and get building defects assessed
Moisture after parking Check what the car and wet equipment bring in
Damp behind stacked boxes Move belongings so the area can be inspected
Repeated condensation Record conditions and seek advice on the building and ventilation

Leave room to see the problem

Avoid packing boxes tightly against an area you already know gets wet. Keep belongings accessible so you can inspect both them and the surface behind. Raising suitable storage off the floor can reduce direct contact with a wet patch, but it does not make the garage dry or prove that a wall-mounted system is suitable.

Follow care instructions for fabrics, tools and leisure equipment. Dry wet items before enclosing them where their maker requires it. A sealed box containing damp kit can preserve the problem instead of solving it.

Check conditions before choosing a dehumidifier

A machine's headline extraction figure does not establish how it will perform in your unheated garage. Record the temperatures the space actually reaches and compare them with the operating range and installation requirements for the exact model.

Meaco's dehumidifier basics guide explains why colder spaces need particular care when choosing a machine. Use current model documentation for the purchase decision; this guide does not recommend a particular unit or promise a humidity result.

Allow the clearances, drainage arrangement and electrical installation required by the equipment. Do not block existing ventilation or run trailing leads across the parking route to make a machine fit.

Know when storage is the wrong task

Persistent leaks, deteriorating surfaces or uncertain building defects need a competent assessment. Avoid covering suspect areas with panels or cabinets before the cause is understood. Keep the garage door, services and inspection points accessible.

Once the moisture issue is addressed, use storage zones to separate wet arrivals from belongings that need dry storage. For mounting questions, read wall suitability and fixings.
