A storage system's published load rating does not establish the capacity of your garage wall. You need to know the wall construction and condition, the exact installation requirements and the weight of the system plus everything it will carry. Where any of those is uncertain, stop before drilling.
| Question | Evidence to obtain |
|---|---|
| What is behind the surface? | Confirmed construction, not a guess from the paint finish |
| Is it suitable for this system? | Manufacturer's approved mounting arrangements |
| Which fixings are required? | Instructions for this product and this substrate |
| What does the rating describe? | Per hook, shelf, section or whole system; load distribution |
| What else is in the wall? | Services and obstructions identified before drilling |
Identify the structure
Paint, lining and render can hide very different materials. A wall that sounds solid is not a reliable specification for an anchor. Even where the material is known, its condition and the proposed fixing positions still matter.
Do not treat a bag of supplied screws as proof they suit every garage. As a concrete example, Steadyrack's installation advice explains that its provided masonry anchors are not plasterboard anchors and warns against mounting into plasterboard alone. Read the equivalent instructions for the product you intend to install.
If you cannot establish the wall type or its suitability, ask a competent builder or the system manufacturer. This guide does not provide a fixing design or calculate the wall's capacity.
Keep the conditions attached to the number
A hook rating may apply only when installed on a specified rail or panel. A shelf rating may assume evenly spread contents and a particular bracket arrangement. A whole-system limit can constrain the combined load even when each individual component remains below its own limit.
For example, three shelves each carrying less than a stated individual limit do not automatically prove the complete installation is within its overall rating. Record both figures and their conditions. If a retailer lists a number without explaining the basis, find the maker's documentation before relying on it.
Use the correct instructions
Look up the model and revision you are buying. Elfa's assembly library separates its ranges and components; use that level of specificity with any brand. Do not substitute an installation video for a different rail because it looks easier.
Plan the load and positions before installation. Moving the heaviest boxes onto one shelf later can change the loading arrangement even though the total weight has not changed.
Check it in use
Keep the instructions where you can find them. Follow the manufacturer's inspection and maintenance advice, and investigate movement, damaged components or loose fixings before continuing to use the storage. Do not add extra holes or substitute brackets without confirmation that the modification is allowed. For the space side of the decision, compare shelving layouts and slatwall systems.
